And in the opening lines of The Parlement of Foules he synthe­sized the esthetic process:
The lyf so short, the craft so long to lerne, Th* assay so hard, so sharp the conquering.
If we are still trying to find our bearings, to establish a durable scale of values, we should do well to carry these words in our hearts and to remember that, after all, the fkst century of jazz still has four decades to run.                                  4
